Michael Fegan Obituary

Mike Fegan of St. James, North Carolina, passed away suddenly on March 17th in Bonita Springs, Florida at the age of 77.

Mike was born in Bronxville, NY on November 17, 1946, to the late Walter and Charita McCann Fegan. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School, in New Rochelle, New York. Mike went on to earn a B.S. in Political Science from SUNY, New Paltz where he joined the Marine Corp PLC program, and was a proud member of Delta Kappa Zeta. He earned his J.D. degree from St. John’s University, the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation from the Life Office Management Association.

He was a trustee of both the Marketing Science Institute and the SUNY New Paltz Foundation. He was a past Chairman and the 8th President of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists (ISCEBS) and past President of the FLMI Society of New York

He retired from TIAA in 2001 after a successful 31-year career. He held a number of positions in operations, project management and communications. He retired as VP, Corporate Communications where he was responsible for TIAA’s media and public relations, corporate advertising, corporate sponsorships, and corporate publications.

Mike and his wife Sue moved to St James from Stamford, CT in 2008 where he enjoyed a long and active retirement. He loved art, golf, and skiing, and made the NASTAR National ski finals in his age class twice. He and Sue enjoyed travelling and got to visit many beautiful places over the years.

In retirement, he became very active in the American Legion, currently serving as Commander, District 9 North Carolina American Legion. He had served in other Legion leadership roles for the last ten years of his life. He was deeply proud of his work mentoring high school students for the Legion’s oratorical speech contest. A scholarship fund for local high school students has been established in his memory which will be administered by the Richard H. Stewart Jr. Charitable Foundation.

He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jimmy. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, children Jessica (Sven), Brian (Michelle), Dan, Laura (Ben) and Stephanie (Brian), siblings Kevin, Tom and Barbara, and grandchildren Julia, Ryan, Liana, James, Shaelyn, and Theadora.
