David Luzney was born on February 15, 1953 to Dan and Betty Luzney. He spent his early years in South Bend, Indiana. The family moved to Muncie, Indiana in 1966, where his mother helped to create an Occupational Therapy department at Ball Memorial Hospital.
He attended Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, graduating from high school in 1971. He attended Ball State University for a short period of time before moving to Tallahassee, Florida, where he attended Florida State University. In the mid-1970s he moved to Miami, Florida, where he completed a degree in Insurance at Florida International University. He lived in Miami for 37 years before moving to North Fort Myers, Florida.
Dave was an avid sailor. During his time in Miami he regularly participated in sailboat races on Biscayne Bay as well as in a number of international sailboat races. He had a captain’s license and worked as Dock Master at Brickell Place Marina in Miami.
