Bonita Springs

Beloved husband and Papau,  Gus Levanos died at his Bonita Springs, Florida home on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.  He was 82 years old, having been born in Springfield, Massachusetts, son of Anastasios Levanos and Valentine Vergos.  He graduated with an undergraduate degree from American International College and from Georgetown University where he earned his Doctor of Dental Science degree.  Upon graduation he began his dental practice in Springfield, Massachusetts, serving his patients there until retirement.

Since his retirement, Gus served as Director and later, Treasurer of Eastern Dentist Insurance Company.  There he was instrumental in expanding the organization from serving only in Massachusetts to serving ten other states, providing insurance to over 6,000 dentists.  Throughout his career, he was actively involved in the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society, where he served in many leadership roles including president.  He was extensively involved in mentoring many newly graduated dental professionals.

Gus was always an active member in the Greek Orthodox Church, first in Springfield, Massachusetts at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and later at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Naples, Florida.  Gus enjoyed golf, travel, gardening, and spending time with his family and many friends in Florida and Massachusetts.

Gus was particularly proud of having served his country in the United States Army and later in the United States Army Reserve.  He advanced to the rank of full Colonel at the time of his retirement.  He was involved in many professional organizations, The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Reserve Office, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, and many others.

Gus is survived by the love of his life Maria Thompson, to whom he was married for over 23 years.  In addition to Maria, he is survived by his brother Peter Levanos and sister-in-law Beatrice Levanos who reside in Missouri.  He also leaves his niece Valerie Levanos and her husband Dr. Thomas Esch and children; nephew Thomas Levanos and his wife Sarah and children.  He was also predeceased by his beloved sister Ellen Levanos.  Additionally, Gus is survived by his stepdaughter Monica Harding, son-in-law Sam Harding, and grandsons Luke and Joel Harding who reside in Germany and who loved their Papau so much.  Gus will be missed by all of his family and many close friends.

Services will be held on Wednesday, January 27th at St. Kathrine Greek Orthodox Church in Naples, Florida.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. followed by funeral service at 11:00 A.M.Interment will follow immediately at Naples Memorial Gardens.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield, Massachusetts, and St. Kathrine Greek Orthodox Church in Naples, Florida.

We are a family of faith and we believe that he is safe with God.  He is welcomed with joy and open arms by his family members who have passed before him.  He will be greatly missed by Maria.
