Joe Mack Hicks, age 83, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He was born on July 13, 1942, in Andalusia, Alabama.
Joe was a man of intelligence, dedication, and steady determination. He graduated from Andalusia High School and went on to attend Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He later served his country honorably in the United States Army Reserve as a Specialist 5 with the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade from 1966 to 1972.
Joe built his career as a chemical engineer and manager, working for American Cyanamid and Cytec. He was known not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for the way he supported his family and friends in their business endeavors. He had an unrelenting determination to be there for the people he loved, often going to great lengths to support his parents and family.
He enjoyed riding motorcycles, traveling, golfing, flying model planes with the Gun Lake Prop Busters and giving his time as a volunteer with the Gun Lake Protective Association. Joe lived in Shelbyville, Michigan, and Fort Myers Beach, Florida, and made lasting impressions in both places. Quotes that reflected his spirit are, “Do something, even if it’s wrong,” “Take two, think it through” and a few unsuitable to print here!
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. Hicks and Marjorie Hicks.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Marsha Hicks; his son, Michael Hicks and wife Paige; his daughter, Donna Judkins and Jason; his grandchildren, Caroline Hicks, Thomas Judkins, and William Judkins; his brother, Ben Hicks and wife Cathy; as well as his nephew, Ben Jr., and niece, Carly.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Gallaher American Family Funeral home.
