Gerton Westerop Obituary

It is with great sadness, we announce that Gerton “Wessie” Westerop passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024, he fought valiantly and finally succumbed to cancer.  Wessie was born in Haarlem, in the Netherlands in October 1962.

Wessie’s adventurous spirit affected all who knew him, always outside the box, his projects and escapades, always entertained and drove the process to a new level.  Can’t wait to hear all your stories dear friends and family.   His mom, Anneke, and wife, Jonnie, determined that he had a photographic memory, and was always surprised by his wealth of information, his empathy, patience (ok not completely), eloquence, and kindness.  He had a huge array of interests – he obtained his first sailboat at 9 years old, teaching at 15, racing in the oceans around the Netherlands as a young man, finally getting an old sailboat, Natamus, off the coast of Naples, FL. for the last couple of years.   Fixing and sailing Natamus made him happy.  Sailing to the Dry Tortugas, racing to Tampa – some highlights for Wes and Jonnie’s sailing lives.  Max Verstappen, Real Madrid, Ricky Fowler, UMF – his friends understand.   He spoke 4 languages fluently, loved to tell his “unbelievable” stories, from Nigeria to Alaska, he was able to experience life from inside other worlds like few people ever get to do.   Wes was a brilliant man with a golden heart, we feel blessed to have had him as a part of our lives.

He is survived by his wife Jonnie Westerop of Naples, FL; and his 3 stepchildren Farrah Hamdan of Denver Colorado, Youssef Hamdan & Grace, and Ramsey Hamdan of Fort Collins, Colorado.  His mother, Anneke Smelter of Haarlem, Netherlands; Sister, Petra & Gerrit Zeeman Westerop of Aguilas, Spain; Sister Annette Westerop of El Paso, La Palma, The Canary Islands, Spain; Niece Nerea Echevarria Westerop of Amsterdam, Netherlands.  Many friends from near and all over the world were an important part of Wes’ life and will miss him dearly.

“I am thankful for the love and support I have received during this difficult time.  If you are considering a donation, please donate to AVOW Hospice, Naples, FL., it would be greatly appreciated – contact AVOW at 239-261-4404.   Many thanks to our family and friends!”
